Don’t believe everything you read… Write a new headline!
Sep 16, 2009 by Angela Forfia
Most of today’s youth are active, engaged, and interested in making a positive difference in their world. More likely than not, high school students are an under-tapped and under-recognized source of creativity and energy for our communities, our nation, and our world. Students across the country are taking on causes, making a difference, and reshaping the labels placed on our generation. Health and the environment are two issues where students have been leading change.
Creating change starts local! One way to act local is to advocate for a healthy school environment. Students spend so much time at school and in related activities…it’s time we turn the place around and focus on health.
Tomorrow’s headlines will read…
- Students take on school vending and opt for healthy choices.
- Students redefine physical education…new technology, outdoor adventures, a lifetime of fun an activity.
- Students go green with walking and biking to school.
- Students start a community garden to increase healthy foods for low-income families.
- Students build playground for local elementary school.
What do you want your headline to be?

Steal These Ideas
Brainstorming as a school
Sometimes a group of 6 or 8 students can have hard time deciding how to make their school a healthier place. While surveys, interviews, and focus groups can all help, one school in Kansas decided to bring their whole student body together for two Students Taking Charge forums.
Seeing is believing
Are you getting a lot of resistance from your principal or school nutrition director? Does it seem like you're just not speaking their language? Or do they not understand what your changes will really look like? Find out how Northampton High School took their school leaders to visit another high school that has already put their ideas into action!
