Create a Healthy School Market

Are you starting a school store for your Students Taking Charge group or another student organization? Or are you trying to make your current canteen into a place
where it’s easier to find something good to eat? Whether you’re planning a new store — or trying to improve your old one — start by asking a few questions.

  • Do students, including student athletes, have a place to buy healthy snacks on campus or are they ending up with unhealthy options from the vending machine, corner store, or local fast food restaurant?
  • What products are offered to students, parents, and community members at special events and at your concession stand?
  • Are school stores, canteens, or concessions covered in your school’s wellness policy?

Since school stores are often run by high school volunteers — and their profits come from your purchases — your voice is important! You can speak out for other high
school students who want healthy foods and beverages that are tasty, easy to get, and affordable. If your school store is still selling the same old soft drinks, candy, and chips, work with them to show that healthier options can be just as profitable if they learn what students want, set good prices, and promote them to the school.
