Better Breakfasts

  • Is your cafeteria open to trying out some new foods that meet their budget and nutrition guidelines while scoring high marks from students?
  • Does your cafeteria already have a salad bar for lunch that could be utilized for fruits, yogurt, cereals, or other fun a.m. options?
  • Does your school have a culinary arts program, a garden or greenhouse, farm-to-school partnership, or another program that could bring in healthier, local foods, help your cafeteria come up with ideas to prepare them, and do market research or taste tests?
  • Are there ways that you could combine new food choices with better marketing, a more vibrant cafeteria, or changes to school policies that get more students to breakfast—or more breakfasts to students—either in class or after first period?

Do YOU want a better breakfast at your school? First, investigate!  There are lots of reasons why students might be skipping breakfast.  You wouldn’t want to focus on the food if the real issue is a shortage of time because of bus or bell schedules.  Even the yummiest fresh fruit and yogurt parfait needs policies and promotions that support it!  However, if food is one of the top two issues in your school, you can combine food with another strategy like “Better Breakfasts…in the Classroom!” or “Better Breakfasts…in our new Café!”
