Eat Local at Your School

  • Do you have a green team or a culinary arts, agriculture, or nutrition education program that would co-sponsor a garden with your Students Taking Charge group?
  • Is your cafeteria already participating in a Farm-to-School program that connects local farms to school cafeterias?
    Does your school have space on the roof, on campus, or in a vacant lot that could be transformed into a school garden?
  • Are there local garden centers, farms, or community organizations to help you get started?


No matter where you are in the country, or how much space you have, you can grow fruits and vegetables. Work with school and community leaders to find land that’s suitable for a school garden. Some schools in colder areas have even started greenhouses or hoop houses to extend their growing seasons. Gardens are a great
way to engage parents and community volunteers to help plant, weed, harvest, and expand.

Brainstorming as a school

Sometimes a group of 6 or 8 students can have hard time deciding how to make their school a healthier place.  While surveys, interviews, and focus groups can all help, one school in Kansas decided to bring their whole student body together for two Students Taking Charge forums.
