Walk or Ride to School
- Are the crosswalks marked with signs—or staffed by crossing guards— allowing students to cross busy streets safely?
- Are there bike routes, trails, or sidewalks that connect your school with the surrounding neighborhood?
- Is there a secure place to keep bikes and skateboards once you get to school?
- Is the route to school safe for high school students and younger children who live less than two miles away?
High school students can play a big role in promoting active transportation in their schools and communities. Get support from the school’s environmental club, cross country team, PE teacher, and local elementary school PTA to speak out for safer streets for everyone. Build advocacy skills as you speak with local school and community from principals to police officers to city planners. Earn community service hours by creating a “walking school bus” for younger kids or staffing the bike check-in room at your school.

Or do they not understand what your changes will really look like? Find out how Northampton High School took their school leaders to visit another high school that has already put their ideas into action!
